Zoom video calls have become an essential part of daily life for a lot of people during the pandemic, but we could soon start seeing Zoom’s tech used in a lot more places and not even realize it.
This week, Zoom rolled out a Video SDK, and with it unlocked access to the company’s video and audio technology for use by developers within their own software and apps. Developers can sign-up and get 10,000 minutes per month to play with for free. After that, there’s an annual plan costing $1,000 per year with 30,000 minutes per month included (it’s $0.003 per minute after that). The SDK offers a fully customizable video solution to plug into whatever application is being developed.
Posting on the Zoom Blog, Natalie Mullin, product marketing manager at Zoom, believes the SDK will be popular in the social, retail, and gaming sectors. Mullins expects we’ll get new social media apps appearing that rely on Zoom for video chats, in retail for “unique shopping experiences,” and in gaming for desktop gaming apps wanting to promote audience engagement.
The SDK builds on the success of the Zoom Apps Marketplace, which allows for apps and integrations with the core Zoom experience. Now developers can bypass the Zoom interface completely, design their own, and just plug the video feed directly into it.
