It seems Twitch has a problem with anyone accessing the streaming service while connected to a VPN and is quietly taking action against them.

As Win.gg reports, a growing number of Twitch users are reporting that their chat messages aren’t appearing for other users to read. They can see their own messages in the chat window, but nobody else can. It’s proving to be quite confusing with many users assuming they are simply being ignored for some reason. It’s not until they view the same stream from another device not connected to a VPN that it becomes clear the messages are simply not being shared.

A thread on Reddit was started a month ago by Bluesteain suggesting Twitch is “shadowbanning” (the term given to a full or partial block on user content without them being made aware such a block is in place) anyone who is using a VPN. The thread contains multiple reports of chat comments not appearing, suggesting Twitch is indeed blocking VPN users.

There’s multiple reasons a VPN may be used when visiting Twitch. Some users run a VPN for security, or Twitch may be banned where they live and a VPN gets around the ban. However, a VPN may also be used to circumvent a Twitch account ban, and this could be why the service decided to implement the shadowbanning. For now, there’s been no official comment as to why it’s happening.
