Sonos launched Sonos Radio for its range of audio devices back in April, promising access to over 60,000 radio stations from across the globe for free and supported by ads. But now there’s a paid-tier.
Today, Sonos Radio HD was introduced for $7.99 per month. In return for your cash, Sonos is promising the “highest-quality sound of any radio streaming service,” which means 16-bit 44.1kHz streamed audio. As you’d expect, the ads are gone, there’s unrestricted access to an expanded catalog of original stations, and the option to listen based on genre, decade, artist, or mood. You can also skip and replay songs (on Sonos-owned stations), as well as access exclusive artist content and interviews.
“Sonos Radio is a result of our unwavering commitment to great sound experiences – thoughtfully curated music in incredible sound from the moment our customers set-up,” said Patrick Spence, Sonos CEO. “Sonos Radio HD means even more choice and better sound for Sonos customers. As we continue to innovate to make listening to your favorite audio content at home easier and more enjoyable, Sonos Radio shows the potential of the new experiences we can bring from our platform of hardware, software, and services.”
To celebrate the launch of the HD service, Sonos collaborated with Dolly Parton to introduce an original station called Songteller Radio. It will be focused on “Dolly’s hits, favorite artists, and special commentary on songs and moments throughout her career,” and comes with the promise it will “continually evolve.” Sonos is clearly hoping to do similar collaborations with many other artists, who may also appreciate having a radio station dedicated to themselves and their music.
In order to enjoy Sonos Radio HD you must, of course, own a Sonos product, but also need to be using the Sonos S2 app and operating system, which works with the majority of Sonos’ range of devices. The subscription runs month-to-month and is managed through your Sonos account, so it’s easy to cancel and restart anytime.
