Fans of Samsung’s Galaxy Note line of premium smartphones should prepare themselves for some bad news. Apparently Samsung may not release another model, instead focusing on Galaxy S devices going forward and assigning the Galaxy Note name to the history books.
As Reuters reports, multiple sources who did not want to be identified have stated Samsung currently has no plans to release a new Galaxy Note device in 2021 and is considering discontinuing the phone range completely.
It’s thought that the resources usually focused on developing the next Galaxy Note will instead be allocated to Samsung’s foldable phones, and as a way of satisfying Note fans, the next Galaxy S phone will include a stylus. Future generations of foldable phones are also expected to be stylus compatible.
The Galaxy Note was first launched in October 2011, which means Samsung had an opportunity next year to celebrate the phone’s 10th anniversary. However, it’s thought the coronavirus pandemic has triggered a big drop in demand for premium devices, which has forced Samsung to call into question the development of two separate premium smartphone lines. Tom Kang, an analyst at research firm Counterpoint, told Reuters, “Premium demand has decreased this year and many people are not looking for new products.”
Samsung is declining to comment, and as such we’ll just have to wait and see if a new Note appears in 2021 or if it really has been sidelined by the company. If the Galaxy S does introduce a stylus and Samsung produces an impressive folding phone next year, would anyone really miss the Galaxy Note?
