When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched back in October 2018, it was quickly followed by a beta of an online multiplayer mode called Red Dead Online. Now, two years on, Red Dead Online is set to be released as a standalone game.
As Videogamer reports, developer Rockstar Games announced both PC and console owners will be able to purchase the online-only game from Dec. 1. It means for the first time gamers who don’t own Red Dead Redemption 2 can experience the online component on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and even PS5 and Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility. The game is also available on Google Stadia. Purchases are being encouraged with a 75 percent discount on the usual price of $19.99, meaning you can pick it up for $4.99 at launch (offer ends Feb. 15, 2021).
The only thing you’re losing by purchasing Red Dead Online is the single-player experience. It will save you some cash, though, with the full game still costing around $40. Rockstar is promising all future content updates will be available to you, but the online game is already huge and requires 123GB of disk space. If you are undecided about whether to buy the full game or just Red Dead Online, don’t worry, Rockstar is also allowing the single-player experience to be unlocked in Red Dead Online as a separate purchase/DLC pack. It will be called Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Mode, but the price has yet to be revealed.
Red Dead Online allows players to select one of five specialist roles including Naturalist, Moonshiner, Trader, Collector, and Bounty Hunter. That last role is being enhanced next week with “new criminals to track down and Prestigious level equipment and skills to unlock across 10 more Bounty Hunter ranks. There will also be new Legendary Bounties and a 100 Rank Outlaw Pass.”
