Netflix is betting big on a new slate of 40 different anime titles over the span of 2021.
According to Bloomberg, Netflix made the announcement at Tokyo’s AnimeJapan 2021 Expo, confirming it would premiere a wide variety of different shows over the next few months.
Among some of the new series are Yasuke, a series following an African samurai in feudal-era Japan, and The Way of the House Husband, a new anime adaptation of a beloved manga series in Japan. According to Variety, these anime acquisitions represent almost double the amount of anime series that came to the platform in 2020.
In 2021 alone so far, Netflix has added shows like the violent High Rise Invasion as well as anime versions of popular franchises like Valve’s Dota video game series and Pacific Rim. Given that the worldwide anime market is expected to expand to over $36 billion by 2025, as Bloomberg indicates, the business is more lucrative than ever.
With new movies like Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and adaptations like the manga series Record of Ragnarok set to hit Netflix in the coming days, it looks as though the platform intends to bring a variety of different genres and styles within anime to serve various audiences.
Netflix has yet to announce each of the series it plans to bring to the table just yet. We can expect to learn more about the new shows slated for inclusion on the platform, however, in the coming weeks.
