Back in September, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda. The obvious first question to ask was if Bethesda’s games library was set to become Xbox exclusive? Now we know a little more about what Microsoft has planned.

As Gamespot reports, Microsoft recently attended a management presentation at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment Virtual Conference, which Seeking Alpha transcribed. Xbox Chief Financial Officer Tim Stuart was in attendance and was asked by Alex Giaimo, VP of Internet & Entertainment Equity Research at Jefferies, if certain Bethesda franchises are set to become Xbox exclusive.

The short answer is they aren’t, but Stuart explained, “What we’ll do in the long run is we don’t have intentions of just pulling all of Bethesda content out of Sony or Nintendo or otherwise. But what we want is we want that content, in the long run, to be either first or better or best or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We will want Bethesda content to show up the best as — on our platforms.”

Stuart also says Microsoft knows how important cross-platform play is and that “if it’s good for the gaming ecosystem, it’s good for us, classic rising tide lifts all boats.” He goes on to suggest Bethesda content won’t be limited to Xbox hardware, but it will be content that is subject to timed release, with Xbox/Game Pass subscribers getting the priority. He says, “But if you think about something like Game Pass, if it shows up best in Game Pass, that’s what we want to see, and we want to drive our Game Pass subscriber base through that Bethesda pipeline.”

Much like we’ve seen many times before, sometimes games appear on one platform up to a year before they appear on another. For Bethesda’s games, it looks pretty clear that once the acquisition is complete, all future titles will arrive on Xbox first and will be limited exclusives.
