Parents and kids are spending more time at home, which means more time in front of the TV. So, Google is making it easier to manage content based on who’s watching.
New Google TV kids profiles create a space for each child to immerse themselves in age-appropriate videos, while guardians ensure their own shows and movies aren’t overwhelmed by Doc McStuffins and Captain Underpants.
“As a new father, I’m always thinking about the role technology will play in my children’s lives,” Google TV product manager Saleh Altayyar wrote in a blog announcement. “From Google Kids Space on select Android tablets to teacher-approved apps in Google Play, we’ve already made a lot of progress in helping our kids explore online, but the work isn’t over.”
Enter kids profiles. Choose which apps to add—YouTube Kids, Disney+, Cartoon Network, PBS Kids, Nickelodeon—and leave your children to their own devices, knowing what they’re watching is family friendly. Customize each profile with bright colors and fun themes, including “Under the sea,” “Dinosaur jungle,” and “Space travel.” Kids will soon be able to pick their own avatars, too. “And with Google Play Family Library, you can share access to TV shows and movies you’ve already purchased on other devices (Moana on repeat is absolutely an option),” Altayyar added.
Set daily watch limits and a bedtime schedule via on-screen controls, then let Google do the heavy lifting. As it nears time to turn off the TV, viewers are met with three countdown warnings before the final “Time is up” screen appears and ends their watch time (a feature that can easily be extended during weekends or holidays). A lock option, meanwhile, ensures your clever kids can’t sneak onto your profile, which requires a PIN to access.
Users can also manage certain content controls from the Family Link app, ensuring digital ground rules align across devices. “From your phone, you can see how much time your kids are spending in their favorite apps, block and unblock apps, control app activity, and more,” the blog said.
Support for kids profiles on Google TV will rollout on Chromecast with Google TV and other Google TV streaming devices in the US this month, before arriving globally “over the next few months.”
