The majority of PS4 games will run on PlayStation 5, but that isn’t stopping some developers deciding to upgrade and re-release their titles on Sony’s latest console. Team Ninja is doing just that for both of its Nioh games.
Nioh 2 was released back in March for PS4 and still has one more DLC expansion pack, entitled The First Samurai, launching for the PS4 on Dec. 17. However, Team Ninja decided to celebrate the series as well as embracing next-gen hardware, and on Feb. 5 next year, four new titles will be released, including:
- Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 4)
- Nioh 2 Remastered – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 5)
- Nioh Remastered – The Complete Edition (available on PlayStation 5)
- The Nioh Collection (available on PlayStation 5)
For the PS5 releases, both Complete Editions will include the base game and all the available DLC. The Nioh Collection includes both games and all the DLC packs. If you’ve already played both games, why upgrade? Because Team Ninja is promising 4K visuals and support for 120fps “for silky smooth combat.” The games will also benefit from the ultra-fast SSD storage cutting load times down to a few seconds.
There are a couple of upgrade paths available for PS4 owners. If you decide to buy the PS4 version of Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition, upgrading to the PS5 version is free. However, if you own just the base game of Nioh 2, then you can upgrade to Nioh 2 Remastered on PS5 for free and are entitled to free versions of the DLC packs you already own. If you’re looking to upgrade from the physical version of Nioh 2 on PS4, you’ll need to own a PS5 as the upgrade isn’t available for the PS5 Digital Edition due to the lack of a disc drive. And finally, Team Ninja is ensuring data can be transferred from the PS4 to the PS5 versions, meaning none of your progress will be lost when upgrading.
You may have noticed there’s two things missing from this upgrade path. The first is the fact there’s no way to purchase Nioh 2 DLC packs individually on PS5, so if you aren’t upgrading all packs from the PS4 version it won’t be possible to play them unless you purchase The Complete Edition. The second is no free upgrade for the original Nioh as far as I can tell. It’s a game that is now over three years old, though.
This a very comprehensive upgrade path for a game franchise, and hopefully it becomes the preferred way of carrying out remasters for PS5: The original games, all the additional content, and a 4K/120fps experience along with a free upgrade path for existing owners.
