If you’re a DirecTV or U-verse subscriber, your subscription cost is set to rise on Jan. 17 next year by up to $9 per month.
As Ars Technica reports, AT&T made the announcement on its support website and detailed how pricing is affected based on the package you are subscribed to. The price hike breaks down as follows for DirecTV:
- DirecTV 160-channel Entertainment package – $5 increase (currently $97/month)
- DirecTV 185-channel Choice package – $7 increase (currently $115/month)
- DirecTV 250-channel Ultimate package – $9 increase (currently $142/month)
- DirecTV 330-channel Premium package – $9 increase (currently $197/month)
Similar price increases are being introduced for the full range of U-verse TV packages, of which there are many more options. For example, you can expect to pay $5 more for U-family, $8 more for U200, and $9 more for U300. The U-basic package price remains unchanged.
That’s not the end of the pricing tweaks, though, as AT&T is also introducing a new monthly Federal Cost Recovery Fee of $0.19. It’s there to cover expenses DirecTV has to pay the FCC apparently, but Ars Technica points out AT&T “has a history” of raising these types of fees over time. There are a further 10 fees AT&T can apply to your monthly bill depending on the services subscribed to.
As to why the price of these subscriptions is increasing, AT&T says it’s “due to increased programming costs.” Customers will be left wondering if paying over $100 a month for DirecTV is actually worth it come January.
