Top social-networking sites have embraced blue checkmarks to denote authenticity, and now streaming music service SoundCloud is getting in on the verification game.

SoundCloud has added blue checkmarks to verified creators in search and on profiles. Billie Eilish, Wiz Khalifa, and Trippie Redd, who have been with SoundCloud since the start of their careers, were among the first to be verified.

So how does someone get that blue checkmark next to their name? First, they must make sure their account meets the following criteria:

  • Must represent a well-known and/or highly searched-for artist, collective, DJ, label, curator, or podcaster
  • Must be a unique profile: no fan accounts or impersonators
  • No misleading information and follows SoundCloud’s terms of use
  • Must have a bio, profile photo, and at least one track uploaded.

Artist who think they qualify can head to the settings tab on and click “Request verification.” It could take up to 30 days for the team to decide on their verification status.

SoundCloud Pro Unlimited subscribers will be the first to have their verification applications reviewed. Pro subscribers already have orange Pro star badges on their profiles, which was often mistaken for verification. SoundCloud says the new blue verification checkmark will make things easier to differentiate between the two, visually.

Verification was long synoymous with Twitter, which kept its approval process rather hush-hush for years until opening things up a bit in 2016, with mixed results. Other services, including Facebook and Instagram, have since followed suit. Interestingly, Twitter explored a SoundCloud acquisition in 2014, but opted to invest $70 million instead, which didn’t really pan out.

Meanwhile, SoundCloud rival Bandcamp this week rolled out ticketed, live-streamed events, though as Engadget points out, Bandcamp Live is a little late to the party there. In March, SoundCloud partnered with Twitch to allow SoundCloud Pro, SoundCloud Premier, and Repost by SoundCloud creators to earn money from their Twitch streams.
