Apple is celebrating the upcoming Chinese New Year with a limited edition Year of the Ox set of AirPods Pro.
Similar to the company’s free personalization option (which allows customers to add text and emoji to the front of their charging case), Cupertino has simply engraved a small cartoon ox instead, as well as adding the same design to the outer packaging.
“Here comes a box of blessings for the Year of the Ox,” Apple said in a translated WeChat announcement, accompanied by an Apple Music playlist of songs to ring in the new year.
Available only in certain Asian regions (China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia), the themed headphones sell for 1,999 yuan ($309)—the same price as regular AirPods Pro. The special edition earbuds, limited to two per order, are in short supply: MacRumors tipped a total of 25,400, split between retail stores and online shops.
Chinese New Year, which marks the transition between zodiac signs (2020 was Year of the Rat; 2021 is Year of the Ox), begins Friday, Feb. 12, and culminates in the Lantern Festival on Feb. 26. Each Chinese zodiac comes round only once every 12 years, so this may be your only chance to snag a bovine-inspired charging case. There is no word on whether Apple will continue the tradition with a tiger model in 2022. The firm also launched a Chinese New Year gift guide, encouraging folks to buy new iProducts for a new year.
As AppleInsider pointed out, Cupertino regularly caters to Chinese customers, previously releasing a Shot on iPhone film to mark the 2020 Lunar New Year.
